Do I have an Eating Disorder?

With all of the mixed messages out there it can be hard to know if you have an eating disorder.  Every day we are bombarded with stories of super foods, cancer causing foods, good foods and bad foods and frankly, it’s confusing. To understand if your eating patterns may be disordered, take our interactive quizzes below. They help screen for the most common eating disorders: Anorexia Nervosa; Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder.

Please note that there is another class of eating disorders called Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorder. This category is for people who are struggling with disordered eating, but don’t fall under one of the three major diagnoses, for people who struggle with Anorexia Athletica (athletes who struggle to maintain emotional and physical health while pursuing athletic goals. Learn more about our ELITE Athlete program) and for people struggling with Diabulimia (people with diabetes who intentionally omit or manipulate their insulin intake to manage their weight).

Another way to determine if you have an eating disorder is to know the signs. People struggling with eating disorders often experience the following symptoms:

  • Fatigue/sleep disturbances
  • Dizziness/fainting/weakness
  • Chest pain/shortness of breath
  • Depression/anxiety/suicidality
  • Loss of muscle mass/cold intolerance
  • Frequent urination/loss of menses
  • Stress fractures (from over-exercise)
  • Bloated/heartburn/constipation/diarrhea
  • Puffy cheeks/brittle hair/nails
  • Self-injury

If you are unsure about your eating patterns, and whether or not you may have an eating disorder, the best thing to do is speak with someone. At Eating Disorder Center of Denver, our team members Stacia Noll (720.889.4205) and Bethany Netherton (720.889.4238) can help you determine if you have an eating disorder and how to get help.
