Binge Eating Disorder (BED) Program

Binge Eating Disorder affects more than 8 million men and women. There are 3 times more patients suffering with BED than those diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa together.

In order to improve services specific to the patient with BED, as well as to decrease the overall cost of healthcare services, EDC-D has developed a 10-week treatment program. This unique program offers the structure of the PHP program while addressing the treatment specific needs of the patient.

Why Treat Binge Eating Disorder?

  • There is ample evidence that individuals with BED display rates of ED psychopathology, subjective distress, impairments in quality of life and medical and psychiatric comorbidity at a level that is similar to other ED diagnoses.
  • BED responds to specific psychological treatment (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) more completely than non-specific treatments.

The patient suffering with BED will step through the program as follows:

  • Weeks 1- 3: Partial Hospitalization Program, 10hr/day, 7 days/week
  • Week 4- 6: 6 hour Transition IOP, 7days/week
  • Week 7 - 8: 6 hour Transition IOP, 5 days/week
  • Week 9 - 10: 4 hour Transition IOP, 3 days/week
  • Discharge to Outpatient BED support group and ongoing aftercare

Our patients have the opportunity to utilize the full range of services offered in the Partial Hospitalization Program (link to PHP services) with the addition of evidence based groups shown to be effective in the treatment of BED, such as:

  • Art Therapy
  • Movement Therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • BED specific Process Group

What are the Treatment Goals?

  • To stop binge eating
  • To improve one's attitude toward shape and weight
  • To prevent weight gain and/or help a patient achieve moderate weight loss
  • To treat associated psychiatric impairment
