"The empowerment model and the opportunity to practice skills outside of the program are EDCD's main strengths. I appreciated the philosophy of needing to take responsibility for my own treatment and to be motivated to make changes."

The highest level of care offered by Eating Disorder Center of Denver is PHP. Patients in need of this level of treatment are diagnosed with acute anorexia, bulimia, binge eating or other eating disorders. It includes therapy and therapeutic activities 10 hours a day, seven days a week, with shortened schedules on weekends. This is a highly structured, intensive program designed to treat the most difficult eating disorder situations.
PHP helps patients learn to practice and internalize recovery skills until they can incorporate these behaviors into their way of life. As patients begin to experience daily successes, they make a gradual transition from our supportive, structured environment back into their homes and lives.
Our multidisciplinary team of board-certified psychiatrists, physicians, clinicians, family therapists and registered dietitians are dedicated to bringing about change through empowerment. Working together, they create specialized treatment plans that fit each individual patient’s needs.
The highly structured program includes:
Medical Evaluation: Board-certified psychiatrists oversee each treatment team to ensure the proper regimen focus and to see that co-morbid psychiatric conditions are appropriately diagnosed and treated. In addition, a board-certified internist carefully monitors the physical and medical conditions of all patients.
Individual Therapy: Patients meet weekly for a psychiatric consultation and twice a week with a primary therapist. Patients also attend weekly staff meetings to update their treatment goals and plans for aftercare.
Family/Couples Therapy: A designated family therapist meets with patients and their families each week. Additionally, patients and their families are encouraged to attend weekly multi-family group sessions. We also have a free family and friends support group.
Group Therapy: A wide range of daily psycho-educational, experiential (yoga, movement therapy, art therapy and psychodrama) and process groups cover such topics as:
Nutrition Therapy: Our registered dietitians plan three daily meals and one snack for patients. Meals are eaten in groups with a therapist. The dietitians are also available to meet with patients weekly to review their individual meal plans and goals. Our comprehensive nutrition therapy includes a weekly cooking group and meals out.

Once patients have completed PHP, they step down to IOP. At this stage in recovery, patients are ready to transition to some eating on their own and having time away from the center. The patient and treatment team decide on a schedule that varies from seven days a week to three days a week and includes one meal and snack at the center. An average day is about four hours. During IOP, patients begin planning how to manage their life once they leave treatment.
