Eating Disorder Center of Denver Sponsors First-Time Community Performance of "Breaking the Silence" June 23

DENVER, COLO. (June 18, 2009) - Eating Disorder Center of Denver (EDC-D) is sponsoring the first community performance of "Breaking the Silence" June 23 at Impulse Theater (1634 18th St.) from 6:00-9:00 p.m.

"Breaking the Silence" is a series of vignettes that address eating disorders with the intent to encourage discussion about the disease. The play was created by Mirror Image, a local nonprofit dedicated to eating disorder education, as a way to address a widespread problem with area high school and college age students as well as relevant organizations.

Following the performance is an open conversation between the cast members, an EDC-D clinician and the audience. This discussion allows the audience to ask potentially difficult questions and receive answers from young adults who have faced an eating disorder or hear from a professional who can answer medical-related questions. The June 23 play is the first performance that is open to the general public.

"Eating Disorder Center of Denver is very proud to be sponsoring 'Breaking the Silence'," said Anita Kumar-Gill, M.D., medical director of EDC-D. "The play has been performed for many schools and organizations in the area, but this is the first time it is being offered to the community at large. We hope the play will open a dialogue about eating disorders and encourage those suffering from the disease or their loved ones to seek help."

"'Breaking the Silence' is a production that brings a very emotional issue to young people in a non-confrontational, creative way in order to foster an environment of compassion and facilitate discussion," said Erin Jorgenson, executive director of Mirror Image and the play's author. "The performance strives to educate, heal and encourage people to seek the help they desperately need to fight this terrible disease in all its forms."
